Boreholes fail slowly and then suddenly. The pump that stops on a Friday afternoon has usually been giving warnings for months - a slightly longer run time, a marginally weaker flow, a filter needing more frequent changes. Maintenance is the practice of noticing those warnings while they are still cheap to act on.

Why Borehole Systems Need Servicing

A borehole installation is a pump running in an aggressive environment, connected to electrical gear and a pressurised system, drawing water that may carry sediment and dissolved minerals. Several things change over time whether or not anyone is watching:

  • Sediment accumulates at the bottom of the borehole, gradually reducing effective depth and eventually reaching the pump intake
  • Screens and the surrounding formation encrust with mineral deposits or biofilm, restricting how easily water enters the hole
  • Water levels shift seasonally, and in some areas decline over years, which changes the pump's operating point
  • Pump impellers wear, particularly where any sand is present, reducing output gradually rather than suddenly
  • Pressure vessels lose their pre-charge or fail internally, causing the pump to cycle far more than it should
  • Cable insulation degrades in a permanently wet environment, especially at joints
  • Non-return valves begin to pass, allowing backflow and repeated starting
  • Filters and treatment media exhaust, quietly stopping doing their job long before anyone notices
  • Seals and headworks deteriorate, which is a contamination risk rather than a performance one

None of these announce themselves. All of them are straightforward to check.

What a Borehole Service Covers

A thorough service works through the whole system rather than just the pump:

The borehole

  • Standing water level measured and compared against previous records
  • Pumping water level measured under normal operation
  • Flow rate measured at the discharge and compared against the commissioning figure
  • Headworks, cap and sanitary seal inspected for damage or ingress paths
  • Any sand or sediment in the discharge noted
  • Borehole surrounds checked for drainage that could carry surface water toward the hole

The pump and electrical system

  • Running current measured and compared against the motor nameplate rating
  • Insulation resistance of the motor and cable tested
  • Control gear, contactors and connections inspected for heat damage or corrosion
  • Dry-run protection function proven by test rather than assumed
  • Overload and other protection settings checked against the motor
  • Earthing and earth leakage protection verified
  • Control enclosure checked for water ingress, which is common and destructive

The distribution and storage system

  • Pressure vessel pre-charge checked and reset, and the bladder checked for failure
  • Pressure switch cut-in and cut-out settings verified
  • Non-return valve checked for passing
  • Cycling behaviour observed under normal demand
  • Tanks inspected for sediment, algae, insect ingress and lid condition
  • Float and level switches operated and confirmed
  • Visible pipework and fittings checked for leaks
  • Filtration and treatment serviced, media condition assessed, cartridges replaced

Measurement is the point. A service that produces no numbers is just a look around. Water level, flow rate and running current, recorded each time and compared against the last visit, are what turn maintenance from an inspection into an early warning system. Ask for the readings in writing.

How Often Should a Borehole Be Serviced?

There is no single interval that suits every installation, and anyone quoting one without knowing your system is guessing. What drives the interval is how hard the system works and how much it costs you when it stops:

Whatever interval you settle on, timing matters. Service before the season you depend on the borehole, not during it.

What You Can Monitor Yourself

Most of the value in borehole maintenance comes from noticing change, and much of that needs no technician at all. A simple record kept a few times a year is genuinely useful:

  1. 1Note the flow. Time how long it takes to fill a known container from a fixed outlet. Same outlet, same conditions, every time. A falling figure is your earliest warning.
  2. 2Listen to the pump. Note how often it starts and how long it runs. Increasing frequency or duration for the same demand means something has changed.
  3. 3Watch the water. Changes in clarity, colour, taste or smell, or new staining on paving and sanitaryware, are all worth recording.
  4. 4Check for grit in filters, at outlets or in the bottom of a tank. Sand is never normal and always means something.
  5. 5Look at the headworks. The cap should be intact and sealed, and the ground around it should drain away from the borehole rather than toward it.
  6. 6Check tank and filter housings for sediment, algae and general condition.
  7. 7Keep the file. Commissioning data, yield test report, water analyses and service records in one place. It makes every future diagnosis faster.

Warning Signs Worth Acting On

  • Flow declining gradually - could be pump wear, screen blockage or a falling water level, and testing distinguishes them
  • The pump running longer for the same demand
  • Short cycling - repeated starting and stopping, usually a pressure vessel or non-return valve issue
  • Occasional dry-run trips - the borehole is being drawn down to the intake, which will damage the pump if left
  • Air spluttering at outlets
  • Sand or grit appearing where there was none
  • Rising electricity consumption without a change in water use
  • New staining or a change in taste, which points to a water quality change worth retesting
  • Tripping breakers or earth leakage - an electrical fault developing, and one to act on promptly

Any of these is much cheaper to investigate than to ignore. Several of them, caught early, are minor adjustments rather than replacements.

What Servicing Does Not Fix

Maintenance keeps a sound system running well. It cannot compensate for problems that are structural:

What Affects Maintenance Cost

  • Whether the visit is inspection only, or includes filter and consumable replacement
  • System complexity - a single pump to a tank is a smaller scope than a pump, booster, pressure system and multi-stage treatment
  • Whether the pump is pulled for inspection, which is a much larger operation than a surface check
  • Borehole depth, which affects the effort involved in any work requiring pump removal
  • Site access, and how far apart the borehole, tank, plant and distribution board are
  • Whether water sampling and laboratory analysis are included
  • Whether it is a one-off visit or a scheduled arrangement

What Borehole Servicing Costs

Servicing is the cheapest line on this site and the one that most reliably prevents the expensive ones. A scheduled visit costs a fraction of an emergency pump replacement.

These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.

Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - different 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for the same province that differ by a factor of three - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.

Borehole Maintenance FAQs

How often should a borehole be serviced?

It depends on how hard the system works and what a failure would cost you. A domestic borehole used seasonally for garden irrigation is generally well served by an annual check before the season starts, with simple owner monitoring in between.

Systems running long hours, boreholes with any sand present, and installations where a failure would be disruptive justify shorter intervals. Filtration usually needs servicing on its own, more frequent cycle.

What is included in a borehole service?

A thorough service covers the borehole, the pump and electrical system, and the distribution and storage side. That means measuring standing and pumping water levels, flow rate and running current; testing insulation resistance and proving dry-run protection; and checking control gear, earthing and protection settings.

On the system side it covers pressure vessel pre-charge, pressure switch settings, non-return valve, cycling behaviour, tanks, float switches, visible pipework and any filtration. Ask for the readings in writing - a service without numbers is just a look around.

Can I maintain my borehole myself?

You can do the monitoring, which is where much of the value sits. Timing how long a fixed outlet takes to fill a known container, noting how often and how long the pump runs, watching for changes in clarity, taste or staining, and checking filters for grit are all things an owner can do and record.

The measurement and electrical work - insulation resistance, protection testing, pressure vessel pre-charge, anything involving pulling the pump - needs the right instruments and competence. The two work well together: your records tell the technician what has changed.

My borehole flow has dropped. Is that a maintenance issue?

It might be, but declining flow has several possible causes and they need different responses. Pump impeller wear, a blocked or encrusted screen, a falling water level and a partially closed valve all produce the same symptom.

The way to tell them apart is measurement: comparing current water levels and flow against the original commissioning and yield test figures. That points to whether this is servicing, repair or rehabilitation.

Does servicing include pulling the pump out?

Not usually, and not by default. A standard service is carried out with the pump in place, using measurements taken at the surface - flow, water level, running current and insulation resistance tell you a great deal without removing anything.

Pulling the pump is a much larger operation involving lifting equipment and is normally done when the surface measurements indicate a problem, or during a repair. Check whether it is included or extra when comparing quotes.

What records should I keep for my borehole?

Keep the drilling and construction details, the yield test report, the installation handover record with pump make, model and set depth, all water analyses, and every service report with its readings.

The yield test and commissioning figures are the most valuable, because they are the baseline you compare against years later. Without them, deciding whether a borehole has declined becomes guesswork.

Is maintenance worth it on a borehole that only waters the garden?

The scope can be lighter, but the case still holds. The most expensive failure on any borehole is the pump, and the things that kill pumps - dry running, short cycling, sand, and electrical faults at cable joints - are all detectable before they cause damage.

For a light-duty seasonal system, an annual check before the irrigation season plus your own simple monitoring through the year is usually a sensible balance.

How do I know if my pressure vessel needs attention?

The clearest symptom is short cycling - the pump starting and stopping repeatedly rather than running in reasonable bursts. That normally means the vessel has lost its pre-charge or the internal bladder has failed, leaving too little buffer between cut-in and cut-out.

Pre-charge is checked with the system depressurised and reset to suit the pressure switch settings. It is a routine servicing item, and worth attending to promptly because repeated starting is hard on the motor.
