The Scopes That Make Up a Complete Project
Drilling is one line item among several. A borehole that actually delivers water to where you need it involves a sequence of separate scopes, and quotes that cover only some of them are not comparable with quotes that cover more:

Quotes that look different are often pricing different things. Work through this list on each one:
- Which scopes are included? Survey, drilling, casing, development, testing, analysis, pump, electrical, storage, treatment, distribution, reinstatement.
- Is drilling priced per metre, and is the rate flat or does it change with depth or formation?
- What casing is specified? Diameter, material and class, and how many metres are allowed for.
- Is development included, and how much time is allowed for it?
- How is a dry or low-yield hole treated? Get this in writing.
- Is yield testing included, and what test programme?
- Is the pump specified, or is it a provisional sum pending the test result? A provisional sum is honest; a specified pump before testing is a warning sign.
- Is treatment included? If it is priced before a water analysis exists, ask on what basis.
- What is excluded? The exclusions list often tells you more than the inclusions.
- What is the payment structure, and what happens if the depth substantially exceeds expectations?
- What documentation will you receive? Formation log, completion details, test report, commissioning readings.
- What warranty applies, to workmanship and to equipment separately?
Be cautious of two things. A quote that is substantially cheaper than the others usually has a narrower scope, a lighter casing specification, or less development time - check before assuming it is a better deal. And a guarantee of water, or of a specific yield, before drilling is not something any contractor can honestly offer.
Budgeting Realistically
A few practical points that make budgeting less stressful:
- Budget against the upper end of the expected depth range, not the lower. If it comes in shallower, you have a pleasant surprise rather than a shortfall.
- Treat treatment as an unknown until the water analysis is done. Set something aside rather than assuming none will be needed.
- Phase the project if cash flow requires it. Drilling, testing and analysis first; installation once you know what you have. This is a sensible sequence anyway, not just a financial one.
- Include the running costs in the picture - electricity, servicing, filter consumables, retesting, and eventual pump replacement.
- Consider the alternative. Where the ground suits it, a wellpoint costs a fraction of a borehole and may be adequate for garden irrigation.
- Do not economise on the parts that are hard to fix. Casing specification, sanitary seal, development and dry-run protection are all cheap at the time and expensive to remedy afterwards.

Is a borehole cheaper than a wellpoint?

The catch is that wellpoints only work in sandy ground with a shallow water table, they yield modestly, and they are generally limited to garden irrigation. Can I pay for a borehole in stages?

Does a deeper borehole cost more than just the extra metres?

What ongoing costs should I budget for after installation?
Electricity to run the pump, which varies with depth, flow and running hours. Filter cartridges and treatment consumables where filtration is fitted. Periodic servicing, and water retesting where the water is used indoors.
The significant one is eventual pump replacement. Pumps do not last forever, and budgeting for it means it is a planned expense rather than an emergency. A correctly sized and protected pump lasts considerably longer than an oversized unprotected one, which is where the earlier decisions pay off.
