What to Watch For Here
Steep stands are the practical constraint. The ridge and hillside properties have narrow, steep access and limited working room, and on some of them drilling simply is not practical. That is better established at a site visit than after a quote.
Estuary and lake-side ground holds shallower water but is far more exposed to surface influence, so microbiological testing matters before anything goes indoors.

Registration and Abstraction
This area falls under George Municipality rather than the City of Cape Town, so local registration requirements and by-law conditions are that municipality's. This catches people out when they read Cape Town borehole guidance and assume it applies. The district also falls in the Breede-Gouritz water management area rather than the Cape Town one, which affects how abstraction is administered.
Abstraction itself is governed by the National Water Act. Reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, but irrigation and commercial volumes usually require registration or a water use authorisation from the Department of Water and Sanitation. Confirm both before drilling.

Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - different 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for the same province that differ by a factor of three - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Is Wilderness difficult to drill?
It depends entirely which part you are on. Ridge and hillside stands mean hard rock, unpredictable depth and often severely constrained access. The flatter estuary and valley ground is a much easier proposition.
A site visit settles which applies to you, and occasionally establishes that drilling is not practical at all.
Is water near the lakes and estuary safe to use?
For garden irrigation generally, but anything going indoors needs testing first. Shallow water beside estuary and lake systems is exposed to surface influence in a way deep hard-rock water is not.
Microbiological analysis is the essential part, and a proper sanitary seal on the borehole is the practical protection.
Can a rig get onto a Wilderness Heights property?
